In March of 2026, I took a week's vacation to visit my Aunt Laurel and Uncle Rene in the Baltimore area, and they kindly obliged to schlepp my ass around for more cemetery tours. Tuesday was Baltimore day, and I got shots of both Samuel Chase and John Archibald Campbell.
Samuel "Old Baconface" Chase is buried in Old St. Paul's Cemetery, now located on the campus of the University of Maryland. On the way to pick up my cousin Marcel, we drove past St. Paul's and found the gate locked closed and chained shut. While we figured out what to do, I called the offices of St. Paul's Episcopal and left a message asking if there was a way I could get in there.
Five minutes later, I got a call from the retired curator of the cemetery saying, "I hear you're out banging on the gate trying to get in." I told him my crowbar wasn't doing well in wedging that gate open. He responded that "most folks just flip over the trash can on the corner and jump over the wall." I thanked him for the inspiration for how to get in. Funny guy. Dry sense of humor.
He ended up giving me the code to the lockbox on the gate. Which was objectively awesome.
So we picked up Marcel and made our way back, got in there and I took my photos.
In the mid 1970s, a decision was made to carve a new inscription into the back of the stone, and then rotate the stone 180 degrees. So I have shots of both the updated inscription on the front and the original inscription on the back. In addition, this stone originally had a carved stone cross on top which, by either weather or vandals, broke off and is located "in the shed" awaiting repair.
And the word "cemetery" is misspelled on the entry sign
